Great MarcusCicero Blocking Incident

HCM 3

The Great MarcusCicero Blocking Incident began when several users got fed up with the indecisiveness regarding MarcusCicero's status. He has been blocked and vandal binned several times in September 2009, but every time he was unblocked/unbinned shortly afterwards by another sysop. His proposal of a RationalWiki Reform Society also ruffled a few feathers.

After Marcus posted a provocative comment on a thread started by a newbie,[1] Jeeves decided that enough was enough and that a new blocking policy would be required for users like Marcus, TK and CUR, to avoid a repeat of the Great TK Banning Incident.

Jeeves proposed a policy addendum that would allow blocking a user for up to 6 months.[2] A few users voiced their disapproval.[Oh, really?] Frustrated that no decision has been made, Ace McWicked and Theemperor decided to act and called a vote on blocking MC, regardless of the policy proposal.[3] Human arrived, unblocked MarcusCicero and vowed to keep unblocking him as long as he had the power to do so, strongly disagreeing with the new policy.[4]

Some rationalwikians were persuaded by Human and changed their votes.[Oh, really?] The voting ended with the majority favoring not to block.[5] The debate soon degenerated into silliness.[6]

[edit] Will they never learn?

Amazingly, in October, after MC posted "Any of you cunts want to make me a sysop?" it was decided that he had learned his lesson and he was made a sysop by the said ....ummm .... users. This later caused so much consternation that MC probably needed a handkerchief to wipe his keyboard.

The question which the learned users failed to ask themselves was: Why would MC wish to be a sysop, and why would he ask for it in such an abusive manner? There are three possibilities:

  1. He wished to fight the many vandals who disrupt the site on a daily basis.
  2. He wished to start another debate with himself as the main issue.
  3. There is also the possibility that he may have simply asked for a laugh and had no other motive. (Though this doesn't differ much from 2)

Is it that difficult to answer? Is it really that easy to troll RW? On the other hand MC may not intend to troll at all - the community's reactions to MC is what leads to HCM, not MC's actions.
