...there are believers... who may want an excuse to give you low marks if you turn in a rushed assignment or a late assignment. It’s sometimes a hard and unjust world.

—Proxima Centauri[4]

Proxima Centauri (Latin for "close to a centaur")[5] is an outspoken atheist who frequently wishes to express her opinions on RationalWiki. Unfortunately, her writing skills are not always up to the tasks which she sets for herself (and by that, we mean she sucks at writing. Period!), and this discrepancy can sometimes lead to problems. For various reasons, Proxima Centauri seems to have gained the special enmity of some RationalWiki editors.

She was sysopped on 29 June 2008 by Human, bureaucratised on 13 September 2008 by Javascap, debureaucratised 3 hours later by Pink and made a town crier, then rebureaucratised by Phantom Hoover on 26 January 2009, before being debureaucratised again after Phantom Hoover remembered that she had semi-retired. No one knows why.

Proxima is a keen watcher of Conservapedia and a frequent WIGO commentator on (often quite minor) goings-on there. It is often apparent that she is drawing attention to her own CP sockpuppets; as Jazzman831 once commented (apparently unaware of PC's gender), she "has a history of pimping his [sic] own vandalism".[6] As of December 2008, she has also made many resentful comments about no longer being able to edit CP due to an IP range block.[7] It also appears that her RationalWiki account was briefly hacked by Ed Poor on Christmas Day 2008.

During December 2008, Proxima Centauri came into conflict with Phantom Hoover and others over the "Rose Pedals incident", in which she blocked accounts she believed to be socks of known vandal Fall down, but was herself blocked by Phantom Hoover for being "overly trigger-happy". PC complained about this on Phantom Hoover's and Fall down's talk pages, and some further disharmony followed before the subject was dropped.

Sadly, allegedly being unaware of the rules, within three days of joining RationalWiki, Proxima Centauri joined RationalWikiWiki and started her own article,[8] which she has occasionally edited and reverted "anonymously" since.

[edit] Socking controversy

The following entry on this page caused Proxima Centauri to threaten to leave Rationalwiki.

Proxima Centauri is generally known to be the reincarnation of former RationalWiki editor Barbara Shack. Comments at Liberapedia, where she also uses both names, confirm this.[9]

Her reaction may have been excessive as the entry at Liberapedia is rather ambiguous and does not look like positive proof. Consequently, outright denial at this site might have been a better response rather than making it primetime viewing at Rationalwiki. However the fact that Proxima Centauri claimed on Rationalwiki that it was an invasion of privacy, and made it an "either it goes or I go" issue, rather tended to confirm that the statement was true.

In the interest of fairness the edit was removed for 24 hours to give either Proxima Centauri or any other interested party time to explain why the quote should be permanently removed but, in the absence of any such explanation, it has been reinserted above. Nevertheless we remain open to persuasion and, should a compelling case for its removal be presented, the issue may still be re-examined.

[edit] Butthurt

She ran off to insert a smear on the WikiIndex article on RationalWiki,[10] even pointing it out here.[11] Two people tried to remove the sentence,[12][13] but she reinserted it[14][15] and locked the article[16] with the comment that users of WikiIndex can benefit from it and she doesn't want it removed. The result? Now her real name is clearly associated with her handle on a third wiki, [17] and she lost her sysop powers for locking the page. [18]
